African American Artists

During February, in honor of Black History Month, Art students from EC 4 through 8th grade, studied African American artists and other influential African Americans through the medium of collage, painting and sculpture.

EC 4’s, 1st and 3rd grades studied Alma Thomas, an African American female artist who used beautiful colors to create abstract art in geometric patterns.

Kindergarten and 2nd grade studied Faith Ringgold, an African American female artist who painted pictures that told stories on handmade quilts. She also authored and illustrated a children’s book, Tar Beach.

4th grade studied Romare Bearden, an African American male collage artist. He was part of the Harlem renaissance movement and his collages depicted the good and the bad about life as a black person in America.

5th and 6th grades were asked to illustrate a famous quote, and 7th and 8th grades were to create a collage picture and contour drawing of an influential African American.

This study opened the way for some very thoughtful discussions about the journey our country has taken in the way we view and treat all of our citizens; our civil rights, the examples of others who have gone before us, and the contributions each one of us can make to improve our local community and our nation.
