Trinity 6th graders Mia Steele and Katie Fernandez have been involved with the Girl Scouts’ organization since they were in first grade here at our school. On the verge of earning their Bronze Award, the highest honor a junior Girl Scout can achieve, they set out to devise a plan to meet the demanding requirements of the prestigious award. To earn a Bronze Award, Girl Scouts must complete a ‘Journey’- a minimum of 20 hours working with a team, exploring the community around them, choosing a specific project, and then following through with it.

Mia and Katie decided to set out on their journey to bring attention to energy conservation here at Trinity, a topic important to them and to the Trinity community as a whole. As Katie stated, “We decided to put together a project that would help our school, while knowing we already were working on something outside of school.” After spending a great deal of time putting together the specifics of the project and getting it approved by Ms. Sonia, the girls got to work bringing awareness to the entire school about the importance of turning off power switches when they’re not being used.

Katie and Mia spent time over the summer looking through a variety of designs they could use for the stickers, adjusting their sizes, and fine tuning the final products that now grace approximately 165 light switches in both Spoto and Greco Hall. They estimate they spent a minimum of an hour and half placing all of the stickers on the switches.

It’s hard to not notice now, walking in and out of classrooms and down the hallways of Trinity, all of the stickers the girls have placed on the switches to remind students and adults alike that, as both girls stated, ‘no matter how little something may seem, it can still make a big change”.
